Our lead Maltster, Andy, has deep agriculture roots in PA. He grew up on a farm in Portage, on the western side of the state. Upon achieving a Bachelor’s in Science in college, he became a commissioned officer in the US Army. For the next decade, he circumnavigated the globe, leading soldiers in semi-permissive and hostile environments. He left the military as a Major in the Special Forces, holding his last job in the Army as the Aide-De-Camp to the Commander of the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan (COMSOJTF-A).
Andy has always had a passion for agriculture, leading, and beer. Starting a craft malthouse would be a perfect fit. He attended a course at the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre to help fine-tune his plan of action for developing Appalachian Malting. Everything else followed suit. Andy rarely sleeps, so come visit him sometime at the malt house!
Co-owner Vincent Golden was born and raised on a dairy farm. He achieved a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts Education at California University of Pennsylvania followed by a Master of Science in Industrial Relations at Saint Francis University. After his tour in the Army, he taught Power Technology for over 30 years. He is married to his beautiful wife of 39 years and has 5 children and 11 grandchildren. As the son of a farmer he learned the roots of the business and began crop farming corn, oats and hay. He eventually gravitated toward specialty crops like sunflowers, buckwheat, and spelt. Finding an additional way to enhance the farm, Vince worked to certify the farm organic. As an exceptional way to raise a family, he has found a lasting enterprise in malting for the fourth generation of Golden farmers.
